How stump grinding works
The job happens in three stages, and most of the work is in the middle one.
First
Clear around the stump
We check for pipes, cables and sprinklers near the stump and move rocks out of the way. Tell us about anything buried there that you know of.
Then
Grind it down
A grinder with a spinning cutting wheel, which is a heavy disc fitted with hard teeth, passes back and forth over the stump. It turns the wood into chips until the stump is gone under the soil.
Last
Rake and clear
The hole is left holding wood chips mixed with soil. We rake the area level, clean up the chips that flew around, and load the rest onto the truck.
After the stump is gone
What you can plant or pave after stump grinding
The ground where the stump was is now a mix of wood chips and soil. What you do next depends on what's going there.
New lawn
Rake out most of the chips, top up with good soil and lay turf or sow seed. Chips left in the soil use up nitrogen as they break down, so grass over them can look pale for a while.
A new tree or garden bed
Plant a little to one side of the old stump if you can. If it has to go in the same spot, dig the chips out and fill the hole with garden soil first.
Paving or a slab
Remove the chips and pack the hole with crushed rock before the paving goes down. Chips left under pavers rot and settle, and the pavers sink with them.

Grind the stump or leave it in?
Gums are good at growing back, and their stumps often push up a crop of new shoots. A stump also trips people up, gets in the way of the mower and can attract termites as it rots.
Most regrowth starts from the stump and the top of the roots, and grinding takes both out. The deeper roots are left to rot away slowly in the soil.
If the stump isn't in anyone's way and you don't mind seeing it, leaving it is a fair choice too.
Questions
Stump grinding questions
Grinding is how we remove stumps. Digging out the whole stump and its main roots leaves a big hole, but grinding turns the stump into chips where it sits, so the yard is in better shape afterwards.
Most ground stumps don't. Some trees, gums among them, can still push up a shoot or two from roots left in the soil. If that happens, cut the shoots off at ground level as they appear.
